Dr. Enk has served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, since 2004.He received his M.D. at the University of Münster, Germany in 1988. Afterwards, Dr. Enk completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. S.I. Katz at the Dermatology Branch of the NCI from 1990-1993 and became a trained dermato-immunologist. On his return to Germany he completed his residency in Dermatology at the Dept. of Dermatology in Mainz, Germany in 1994.
Dr. Enk’s main research interest has always been immuno-dermatology in its different facets from inflammation to cancer. He has co-authored more than 500 peer-reviewed publications and is European Editor of “Fitzpatrick’s Dermatology“ textbook.
In his scientific career, Dr Enk has held multiple positions. He has been Secretary and President of the ESDR, the European Dermatology Forum (EDF), and the German Dermatol. Association, as well as founding President of the ISID. He is an elected member of the German Academy of Sciences, “Leopoldina“. He has received honorary membership of the SID, ESDR, JSID, JDA, Hungarian Society of Dermatology, Austrian Soc. Of Dermatology, and French Society of Dermatology. Dr Enk also was President of numerous international Meetings such as the ISID meeting in 2013 in Edinburgh, the EDF meeting 2020 in Montreal, and the meeting of the German Dermatol. Association in Berlin 2017.
Dr. Enk has received grant support from national and international institutions over many years. He is currently spokesperson of “combined research consortium 156“ on immunity of the skin funded by the German research association (DFG). He is also responsible for launching the centers for personalized medicine on immune-mediated disease in Germany.
